Front:
A crisp, vintage sepia-toned image showing Bobby Jones standing confidently on the course, hands on hips, wearing classic knickers, tie, and saddle shoes. The photo radiates the poise and composure that defined Jones both on and off the course during the golden age of golf. The quality, clarity, and contrast are exceptional for a press image of this era.
Reverse:
The back features the original Associated Press typed caption, dated June 25, 1929, titled “Leads Field in National Open.” It details Jones’ performance at Winged Foot, where he opened with an outstanding score of 36-31—67 for the first eighteen holes—leading the field after the first round. Original newsroom editorial markings and stamps remain intact, confirming its authenticity and historic use.
PSA Type 1 Holder:
Securely encapsulated in a PSA Type 1 photo holder, which designates it as a first-generation photograph developed directly from the original negative within approximately two years of the image being taken. This is the highest level of authenticity for vintage press photography and ensures long-term archival protection.
Size:
Measures approximately 6.5" x 8.5", a standard format for Associated Press Type 1 news photos of the late 1920s.
Historical Significance:
Bobby Jones (1902–1971) is widely regarded as one of the greatest golfers in history. Known for his unmatched sportsmanship and amateur status, Jones captured 13 major championships, including the Grand Slam in 1930, winning all four major titles of his era in a single season—a feat that has never been equaled. He later co-founded Augusta National Golf Club and the Masters Tournament, two of golf’s most hallowed institutions.
This photograph represents a pivotal moment in Jones’ storied career and is a museum-worthy example of early sports photography documenting one of the game’s true icons.
