From the Steve Grad Autograph Collection – Offered here is a Project Mercury First Day of Issue cover, postmarked Cape Canaveral, FL – February 20, 1962, featuring the iconic Mercury stamp. This historic cover is signed in green ink by astronaut James McDivitt and in black ink by astronaut Jim Irwin.

James A. McDivitt (1929–2022) was a key figure in the Apollo program. He served as Command Pilot of Gemini 4 (1965), the mission that featured America’s first spacewalk by Ed White, and later as Commander of Apollo 9 (1969), the vital test mission of the Lunar Module in Earth orbit. Following his flights, McDivitt managed the Apollo program during its crucial years. He passed away in 2022 at the age of 93.

James B. Irwin (1930–1991) served as Lunar Module Pilot on Apollo 15 (1971), becoming the eighth man to walk on the Moon. During three lunar EVAs, Irwin helped deploy the first Lunar Rover and contributed to the collection of scientifically significant samples. After NASA, he dedicated his life to Christian ministry. Irwin died in 1991 at just 61, making his autograph particularly scarce and prized among collectors.
