From the Steve Grad Autograph Collection – a truly extraordinary and rare 8x10 behind-the-scenes photograph from The Empire Strikes Back featuring three legendary ILM matte painters who briefly doubled in costume for a scene in the film. This unique photo has been personally obtained and signed in person by Steve Grad from all three men:
-
Ralph McQuarrie (d. 2012) – the visionary concept artist whose designs defined the look of the Star Wars universe. McQuarrie’s paintings helped secure funding for the original film and shaped the iconic appearances of Darth Vader, C-3PO, R2-D2, and countless environments across the saga. His influence on the entire series cannot be overstated, making his autograph one of the most desirable in all of Star Wars collecting.
-
Harrison Ellenshaw – celebrated matte painter who contributed to Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, and other classics including Tron. Ellenshaw’s artistry brought countless impossible landscapes to life on screen, seamlessly blending painted visuals with live-action footage.
-
Michael Pangrazio – a highly respected matte painter whose work helped create the immersive environments of The Empire Strikes Back. Pangrazio later went on to a distinguished career in film and remains based in New Zealand.
Rarity & Importance:
Photos like this are incredibly scarce—only a handful exist signed by all three. With McQuarrie’s passing in 2012, Ellenshaw retired, and Pangrazio living abroad, opportunities to obtain such a grouping are virtually gone. This signed image captures the unsung heroes of Star Wars, the matte painters whose work gave the saga its epic scope.
